The museum collection of The City Museum of Ljubljana and Tobačna Ljubljana The museum collection was established in 1992 in the premises of the former tobacco warehouse in Tobačna Ljubljana. The exhibition follows the chronological order: from Columbus' discovery of tobacco in America over 500 years ago through development of the tobacco industry in Europe, to the manufacturing of Virginia cigars, which made the Ljubljana Tobacco Factory famous in the 19th century Europe, to factory workers and their lifestyle. Special emphasis is given to the history of the tobacco factory in Ljubljana, one of the oldest and, for many decades, the largest factory in Ljubljana. It shows the construction of the factory which was in 1872 designed as a neat group of buildings in the typical industrial architecture style of the second half of the 19th century. Objects, photographs, documents and reconstructions exhibited on the area of 325 square meters, take the visitor through the production process of different tobacco products (cigars, pipe tobacco, snuff, chewing tobacco and cigarettes), their use, tobacco workers' way of life - especially that of cigar-ladies - and organisation of the internal factory life and its development to the present days. For visitors the valuable collection of pipes from different periods, tobacco boxes, cigarette cases, cigarette holders, cigarettes and their wrappings are of special interest. The collection shows the significance and role of the tobacco factory and its workers in the industrial and cultural life of Ljubljana and Slovenia. At the same time it shows the use of tobacco products as well as the culture of smoking in the past and present. Opened by appointment. Admission is free.
